Today we are introducing a new series, Meet the Media, featuring inspiring and successful journalists and media professionals and introducing the person beyond the byline. We’re so excited to introduce our first guest, Ashley Brewer. Those local to Los Angeles might recognize her as the weekend sports anchor and reporter for ABC7, but she recently announced that she has accepted a new sportscasting position at ESPN. We had the pleasure of meeting the person behind the reporting, and learned all about her career path, inspirations and lifestyle.
Please welcome Ashley!
Introduce yourself.
Hi! I’m Ashley Brewer, sportscaster for ESPN!
How did you get into sportscasting? Was this always where you saw yourself?
I never dreamed I’d work in TV. It wasn’t until late in my senior year at USC I realized I needed an internship. My mom had an old friend who helped introduce me to the sports office at ABC7, I got the internship and the rest is history!

What’s an accomplishment you consider to be the most significant in your career so far?
When I was recently hired by ESPN. They are the top of the industry in every aspect. I was so honored they even brought me in for an audition.
What’s a failure that turned into a blessing?
I auditioned for a job in Boston I really wanted and didn’t hear back for months, so I took a job at ABC7 in LA. It turned out to be the greatest job ever, I got to cover so many amazing events and so many doors were opened from being on TV in LA.
Morning routine?
Coffee, soul cycle, more coffee!
Who inspires you?
My mom! She worked hard to build a career when she was my age, and then sacrificed a blossoming career to become a mother of 5. She had the best of both worlds between work and family, I hope to balance both of those in my 30’s.
What’s one piece of career advice you’d give a young person looking to follow in your footsteps?
Don’t worry what anyone else is doing. Comparison is the thief of joy. Work hard in your job and focus on your path, no one else’s, and you will ascend further than you dreamed!
When you’re not killin’ it in your career, what can we find you doing?
At the beach, working out, with my girlfriends or my boyfriend’s hockey games!
Rapid Fire
