A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN INTERN

WRITTEN BY A PAST BLND INTERN

WHY BE AN INTERN?

As you wrap up your last few years of college you’re beginning to question whether or not an internship is truly that important when pursuing your career. How do you go to school, hang out with friends, work, AND find time for an internship? Plus, if you do decide to do an internship, will it be paid or unpaid? I mean, why waste your precious time and efforts and get no reward ($$) out of it? Or so you think.

A few moons ago, we as BLND interns, we’re in your same position. We’re not going to beat around the bush, we know the struggle is real. Regardless, we strapped up our boots nice and tight and just dove in. Somehow we found time to balance school, work, and an internship. Yes we cut back on our late night frenzies, random weekend trips to Vegas, and even attending our ritual weekend BBQ’s, but we did it because we knew how important it was to gain the experience and expertise in our career of choice. We knew our futures depended on it, so we went for it.

Honestly, an internship is an important investment for your future and your career. It’s the perfect way to make mistakes, gain experience, skills, and relevant knowledge for the workplace. Plus, an internship provides a way to build connections and relationships to help you succeed. The importance of an internship is to assure that you have chosen the right career for YOU.

Don’t think that the internship is solely about you. Your employer has a goal too. Ultimately your boss wants to see that you have what it takes to be a part of the team, and even if you don’t get hired on, you better work your little tush off so you can leave with a rockin’ letter of recommendation.

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO BE A BLND INTERN?

With that being said, the BLND PR Founder Bryanne Lawless and Account Director, Britta Relyea, are focused on developing their interns and preparing them for the PR World. Some people may think that being an intern means walking the boss’s dog or getting everyone coffee, but here you are an “account coordinator,” which really means you pull your own weight in the office.

BLND INTERN DAY BREAKDOWN

To better explain the real BLND day-to-day life we experience three days a week, we have put it into an hourly schedule, enjoy!

9:45 am: The first uphill walk of the day to the office and if we are lucky hitting Starbucks before the 10 a.m. lines.

10 am: Arrive at work, promptly greeted by Benzo and Lulu the sweet office pups, and settling into work on your computer for the next 6 hours.

10-12 pm: Start on day to day tasks for clients which includes but is not limited to—update social media, complete weekly plans, plan out social media, interact with seriously EVERYONE on the internet, and work on individual tasks that are due in a report at the end of the week.

12 pm: Lunch in beautiful Hermosa Beach…how could it be worse!? With an entire hour, that really helps mellow out a bit if you’re feeling overwhelmed, especially having lunch with other interns. Some of us really like the little beach restaurants on the pier and the amazing cupcake on the corner. This is also a really good time to get more coffee, heads up!

1-3 pm: Usually, when you get back from lunch Britta is waiting to give you something else to work on as a team. The afternoons are usually where we do the most PR related activities for clients- pitching, blogging, media communication, press releases, etc. Needless to say, when you come back be ready for anything!

4 pm: Crunch time, which really means the last time to get out everything you were assigned to that day and begin making your list of to-do’s for tomorrow. The finale of the day is walking back up hill to get to your free all-day parking, and justifying all of the Starbucks you consumed that day.
