Every Monday we bring you a feature on a talented blogger who inspires us. This week we are happy to feature California Girl Mel of MelRod Style. She’s a chocolate & animal loving fashionista with a penchant for shoe hoarding – all of which we support in full. She’s done collabs with countless brands such as Smashbox, O’Neills and Sigma Beauty, and is also the co-founder of TheWearToGirls.com.
I’m a style blogger for MelRodStyle.com. I started my blog in 2010 as a way to share my outfits and DIYs. I love putting together looks so my blog has been a creative outlet for me to be able to showcase my outfits of the day. I’ve always been a fan of DIYs, so being able to make a few things here and there has also been fun. Since then, it has continued as a personal style blog as well as a place for me to document the things I love from fashion to beauty and everything inbetween. Oh, and I’m a mommy of 4 babies… 4 furry babies, that is.
What 3 words would you use to describe yourself?
Diverse, clean, optimistic.
What Profession other than yours would you love to attempt?
My friends would say a comedian (apparently I’m a funny gal). I would say dance. Play my jams and I’ll show you a step or two.
What is your favorite quote?
Make it Happen.
What inspired your blog?
Back in 2010, Facebook was really the only social media outlet and I wanted to find a way to express my personal style. I loved taking photos of my outfits but didn’t know what to do with the photos afterwards, so when I first discovered the “blogging world”, I instantly knew this was for me. I found a way to share my style and what inspires me on a daily basis.
What is your favorite social media platform and why?
Instagram, of course. I’m a visual person. I love pretty photos. I also turn to Pinterest for inspiration, and have recently found a love for Tumblr – so many inspirational photos.
Where do you find inspiration for blog posts?
Oh gosh, where do I begin. I find inspiration from people watching. Streetstyle is my go-to for inspiration.
What do you think it is about your blog that keeps people coming back for more?
Authenticity. I’m not a writer nor have I ever claimed to be one, so when I draft a post, I speak from my heart, my mind, honestly whatever is going through my brain at that moment. I try to keep my photos consistent and create pretty content that I look for in other blogs.
How does a brand get your attention for a feature?
A personal email that includes a signature. Not the kind that start off with “Hi Blogger”.
What do you love most about blogging?
The freedom to be creative with my blog and run whichever direction I choose to take because I’m in charge. Blogging is fun for me and I enjoy it. I also love the relationships I’ve built with brands/companies along the way, and most importantly, the blogger friends I’ve made. I’ve connected with so many incredible people in this blogger community.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Whenever I am asked that question, I say a shoe designer. I would love to one day design my own shoe collection. I also hope to one day be married to my boyfriend and perhaps have a baby… a human baby, that is.
In your opinion, what separates a great blog from an unsuccessful blog?
Be consistent, be creative, be passionate, be you.
